In SharePoint in Microsoft 365, is there a upload limit or max size of content you can upload into a library at a single time?

In SharePoint in Microsoft 365, is there a upload limit or max size of content you can upload into a library at a single time? If so, what are the limits? Are they the same as the Moving and copying across sites limits, or non-existent? The upload methods I’m referring to are drag and drop and the Upload button the command bar. (Either Files or Folder.)

Background:

  • I know a single document’s upload max is 250 GB. I’m referring to a situation that involves bulk uploading thousands of documents form a shared drive into SharePoint. In that scenario, are there any limits on the number of folders and files uploaded at a time? (Either using drag and drop or the Upload button on the command bar.)
  • Microsoft’s service limits, file size limits section, makes no mention of bulk uploads and upload limits are specified only for Move to and Copy to jobs – once the content is already in SharePoint.
  • Drag and drop used to have known limits, but I cannot find updated information for SharePoint in Microsoft 365/modern experience.

SharePoint Limits:

  • File size and file path length
    • 250 GB – File upload
    • 250 MB – File attached to list item
  • Moving and copying across sites
    • No more than 100 GB total file size
    • No more than 30,000 files
    • Each file must be less than 15 GB
  • Bulk upload or save using drag and drop
    • ???
  • Bulk upload or save using Upload on command bar
    • ???

    Dear Jenny Hersko,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft community.

I go through your description, for your first concern, the files in SharePoint library are stored in OneDrive so they follow the same restriction and limitations. Please check this article for information in detail: Restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint.

For the second one, drag and drop/Upload button are actually the same thing and the process is same as upload the file in OneDrive, there is no specific differences between them.

Hope my reply could help you, if I misunderstand anything, feel free to point out.

    Have a nice day.

    Sincerely,
