Try File > Open > Recover Unsaved Documents.
Under File>Options>Save, do you have a check mark in the box for"Keep the last AutoRecovered version if I close without saving"?
If you do, then following Stefan's advice, or going to File>Info>Manage Document>Recover Unsaved Files may save your bacon.
Hi Kirsty,
As Stefan shared above, you may try to check the location and see whether you can find your unsaved document from Recover unsaved document location.
However, please take note that generally, recover unsaved document location stored the unsaved files that for disruptions of your device. Hence, it is not recommended to rely on “AutoRecover” of Office apps. It is highly recommended to save your document with Save command or shortcuts Ctrl+S frequently while you work.

Have you not heard of "information overload" I feel really sorry for some of the OP's to whom you respond, formatted or unformatted.
If you close Word normally without saving you are pretty much fubar, even if you have the "recover unsaved files" option turned on. If you close Word normally, the temp file created by that option is deleted. .If you have that option turned on you only option remaining is a long shot. You can try an "undelete" tool and try to find the deleted temp file by it's timestamp. Undelete! What happens to deleted files? Whether you lost a work file, an irreplaceable photo, or a home movie, there are some files that we'd rather not lose. The reasonably-priced software can scan your drive and recover the files you thought were lost to history. You can recover files from a hard disk, SSD, partition, SD card, external drive, RAW drive, USB drive, and just any other storage type. You can customize the scan to choose the types of files you'd like it to find, or just let it scan your drive for all lost files. Either way, the scan only takes a couple of minutes to find all of the lost files. However, if you don't see the files you want, you can perform a deep scan, which will take a lot longer (in my testing, it took about an hour to go through the entire system). This will find far more files, even those with incomplete file properties. The interface provides lots of Filter criteria such as: date created range, last saved range, last printed range, title, num pages, editing time, revision number, file type, author. All of the recovered files I looked at were properly structured.Site has a 30 day moneyback guarantee. I haven’t tried the guarantee, but that sounds encouraging.
