OneDrive app for MacOS will not open

Hello,

Since last Friday, 4/7/23, the OneDrive desktop app for MacOS has not been capable of opening on my MacBook Pro. This failure to open does not provide any error message.

Here are my machine details:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
  • MacOS Catalina 10.15.7

When I say the app will not open, I mean the program will not run at all. Double clicking the app icon triggers the typical animation that occurs when an app opens, however, nothing follows this (i.e., the app does not show up as a process in Activity Monitor and the OneDrive icon does not appear on the Menu Bar).

Here is what I have tried to fix this so far:

  • Restarted my MacBook Pro.
  • "Resetting" the OneDrive app through the app's Package Contents.
  • Removed the OneDrive app and reinstalled it through the Mac App Store.
  • Removed the OneDrive app and reinstalled it through the Microsoft Office Website.
  • Reinstalled the app and attempted to open it with a VPN on.
  • Reinstalled the app and attempted to open it with a VPN off.
  • All combinations of the above.

I have also looked at posts from people with similar issues:

None of these has worked.

Additionally, the OneDrive service as accessed through a web browser, iOS app, and iPadOS app all are functioning without issue as of this writing. However, these platforms are much less efficient in moving and sorting large numbers of files quickly and, as such, cannot adequately replace the standalone app for MacOS.

I have submitted multiple requests for assistance through the OneDrive feedback link and contacting support since this issue arose. However, I have yet to receive a response from support or even an acknowledgment that my support requests have been received by Microsoft.

This is a huge problem as my MacBook Pro is my primary device.

Please help!

Thank you, but didn´t work either.

After i install the Onedrive older version, the solution asks to open Onedrive and monitor the update with Activity Monitor. But when i double click on the Onedrive app, on Applications, nothing happens.

Maybe i need an even older version.

    Thanks, but it didn´t work

As i was installing the older version, internet off, never showed the problem message.

It installed normally, but the Onedrive don´t run, not even the icon on the top is displayed.

Even thought i removed the files, as you suggested, but didn´t work either.

    Any other hint?

    Hi William

I have the exact same issue and Macbook model. I'm thinking the problem is the outdated OS which can't be upgraded. I uninstalled OneDrive, downloaded a new package and re-installed it a few times. Each time I get as far as the login screen before it crashes and refuses to reopen. I tried installing an older version but whatever auto-updates happened last week seem to have affected the system permanently. Will have to use the web version for now until I get a new MacBook. The purchase was planned for this year anyways.

The other option is trying to force an OS update but that will be after I finish my current major project next month.

Same issue here with one of my customers Mac.
Installed onedrive a few months ago. Stopped working 1 week ago.
Would not load, no icon in the top bar.
Removed and reinstalled the APK from the Microsoft site. Worked for a few days, but now after the weekend same issue.
It's loaded in system processes but it's grayed out like it has been paused or disabled?!
Again no icon in the top bar, will not open.
Tried removing and reinstallling both from app store and download APK. At not aval.

It's not a that old mac, but same OS MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 as yours.
Client never updated the OS so I launched the update to MacOS 13.3.1 in the hope that will help.
I will report back if it does.

*ps: not a Mac specialist here.
