How do I insert object on Word 365 shared web document?

Hello,

I am pulling out my hair right now. I tried searching around, but cannot find an answer as to why Insert>Insert Object is not an option on my Word 365 toolbar.

I tried checking looking for File>Options to see about customizing the ribbon bar, but there is no "Options" listed. See my two screenshots.

In summary, I am trying to insert a a few links in my Word document that will open external Word documents for quick referencing.

    Hello! xJoshx!

Thank you for posting this in Microsoft Community!

As per checking the information and screenshot, you are having trouble using the option Insert > Object in your Word, I have reproduced the issue here in my end, and I can see the option in my end. Insert an object in Word or Outlook - Office Support (microsoft.com)

Allow me to ask you some questions for me to better understand why you cannot see this in your end.

    • May I know what Office version and edition of Office installed in your device?
      • You can go to File > Accounts and on the right side you will see Product Information.
If you are using Microsoft Word Online in the web https://microsoft365.com this is a web version Office which has limited features and functionality.

    Here's what you can try:

    • You can try to repair your Office software by doing so:
      • Go to Start Menu > Settings > apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Repair > Quick Repair

I hope this information helps you with your concern

    Best regards,

The ribbon shown in your screen shot indicates that you are using Word Online in a browser. That version of Word does not include the Insert > Object feature (see Word Feature Comparison).

If you want to insert hyperlinks, however, that is in the menu of the Link button.

    Hi,

I am using Word Version 2309 (Build 16827.20166), but the issue where Insert>Object is missing is on the web Word. I see you say it has limited features, so does that imply that the option is missing due to that very reason? Older web versions appear to have had the option to Insert>Object, but perhaps the searching around I did is misleading and it has always been in the app only.

    Jay,

How exactly would I use the Link feature to link to an external file for future staff to open and read? It looks like there are no options listed when I experiment and view under Headings and Bookmarks. Perhaps I have to save the files in a specific Cloud directory?
