when i try to log in to MS defender to install on my phone, I get the following message:
An integrated threat protection solution designed to detect, investigate, and respond to cyber threats across Microsoft 365 services.

That may be well the case but with a different version of defender.
Are there different defender apps on the App Store/Play store available?

I'm Tim, an Independent Advisor here and a Microsoft user like you. I don't work for Microsoft and do not have access to any of your data on their system.
I’m sorry that your experiencing issues. Essentially this app is an enterprise app, not intended for home users.
Your account will not have a license unless it is a business account and your company is paying for the endpoint protection. If this is the case you should contact your IT department.
The app description on the playstore should explain this: “This app is not a free app and is for business/enterprise users only.”
