Getting page back to original page setting after being promoted as a news item

Our colleague promoted one of our guidance pages as a news item not realising it would change the status of the page. We have tried to change it back to 'content page', however when we update it we are still getting the 'Update news' rather than 'republish' option. The promote as a news item option is greyed out in the promote drop down menu and we don't know how to reverse that. Is there a way to get the page back to the original setting and publishing options? Thank you!

I have the same issue but once I get to step#4 and click "edit in grid view" to edit the promoted state. It says "This cell is read-only" so I can't edit the promoted state in grid view

Thanks so much for getting back to me George, I'll try this out.

We found a workaround by copying the template of the page and publishing that, and then updating the links where appropriate.

    Hi SP userZF,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I have now tested it again and can reproduce the same situation. I suggest you try RobElliott's JSON code in this thread to change the value from 2 to 0.

    1. Click the down arrow of the Promoted State column, Column settings> Format this column.

  4. In the Format Created column pane, click Advanced mode at the bottom of the pane, then remove all code and paste RobElliott's JSON code, Save.
  5. Check if you can save its value via the three dots> Demote.

Sincerely,

    Hi Shelagh,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

According to your description, my understanding is that your colleague has promoted a page by clicking the "Promote" button on the toolbar and click "Post as News on this site".

If not, please point it out and let us know.

If so, you can try the following steps to demote the news page back to the site page.

    1. Go to the site> Site contents> Site Pages. You should see the page. If not, please go to the related location where the page is stored.
    2. Create a new view for this library. In the new view, please click "Add column" and select "Show or hide columns".
    3. Please find and tick the "Promoted State" column, and then click Apply (in the upper-left corner of the pane).
    4. Now, you can see the "Promoted State" column in the library. Please click "Edit in grid view" and change this page's value in the "Promoted State" column from 2 to 0.

Additionally, if you are the SharePoint admin or IT department, you can run the PnP PowerShell to get this done.
