Offline edits made to microsoft files lost when syncing onedrive

Question

I often make offline edits to logs and documents at work using excel and docs and manually save (not autosave) using either the desktop app and mobile app. I only have wifi occasionally and let onedrive sync during this time.

Occasionally the changes I made will be reverted after syncing, and are not available on onedrive version history or windows version history. I have sometimes gotten a popup that there was an error syncing when this happens and the document recovery pane has a document listed with the correct date/time but I cannot open this or sync the changes, or save despite the context menu.

the only workaround I think I have found is to use other file formats that onedrive doesn't try to merge such as .txt files. Is there another workaround or log I can provide to fix this longstanding issue? (I see similar reports from years ago)

yes, saving manually or with autosave *should* sync when next online, this does not work reliably in my case.

I could save copies of the documents every time I make edits but then I would have to manually merge them not to mention the waste of space this would be.

This still doesn't help solve my issue

If you edit an existing doc with autosave on the ribbon active it will sync when next on line.

If a new Doc and you saveAs to name it, again it wil sync when next online
