Difference between Junk Email and Spam folders in Outlook?

I use MS Office Outlook 2019. It has a Junk Email Folder and a Spam folder.

I don't have a problem with the Junk Email folder and I know how to select the Block Sender and Never Block Sender options.

However I am confused about the purpose of the Spam folder. I very rarely get emails in the Spam folder, but one day last week I suddenly had 43 emails appear in it, dating over the past month. Most of them were obviously junk/spam or malicious emails, but about ten of them were not junk/spam and I'm sure some of those had already been dealt with in my Inbox.

So what is the difference between the Junk Email and Spam folders, and why should 43 emails suddenly appear in the Spam folder?

The folders seen are those provided by your mail provider, and not MS outlook.

If you have a third party AV/Security that can sometimes add a folder

Hello Palcouk, thanks for your very helpful reply.

I assume that MS Office Outlook provides the Junk Email folder?

I use Norton 360 Premium, could that be what has added the Scam folder? If so, I'll ask them why they have put 43 emails into it in one day!
