Hello Paul Dougherty2,   Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having trouble opening Excel files on your iPad. Generally, if you open Excel and it directly takes you to an editing screen, you can click the back button in the top left corner to return to the main interface.

This interface is similar to the main screen of Excel on a PC or Mac. Here, you can select the third option, which is the folder icon, and choose an existing file from the cloud or your device to open.

If you encounter any issues during this process that prevent you from proceeding, please provide more details!Best RegardsEliac | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

when I launch Excel on my iPad, it says “start with“ and below that there are loads of templates I can open. When I press the upper left back arrow it takes me to the main office 360 interface that offers me the icons for Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.. if I click on one of the templates like blank page, there too if I click on the upper left arrow “back” it does the same thing. So long story short I wish it did what you suggested but instead, it’s just the homepage with the four application icons. Thanks for your reply, what next steps might I take?

Hi Paul Dougherty2, Thank you for including this information in your reply. This clarifies things: it looks like what you are referring to is actually this interface:

It is not the Excel App, but rather the Microsoft 365 App, which is an online application running on OneDrive. If you want more convenient access to files on your device or any location within OneDrive, you will need the Excel App below.

However, it should be noted that for mobile devices larger than 10.1 inches, using these Office applications requires a Microsoft 365 subscription.

I hope the information I provided can resolve your confusion! You can mark my reply with "Yes" or "No" to let me know if this answers your question. If you still have any doubts, feel free to continue discussing them with me in your reply!

I have an iPad Air fifth generation, the width of the screen is under 10 inches, where would that place me since I have an office 365 subscription on my other MacBooks
