"Hamburger" Button not working

Good day,

We’ve encountered an issue over the past two weeks with our Android tablets. On all Sharepoint sites accessed via these devices, the hamburger menu (which opens the side navigation panel) is unresponsive when tapped. The only way to access the menu is by swiping from left to right.

While this isn’t a major inconvenience for most of us, some of our workers are unaware of the swipe gesture, and we find ourselves needing to explain it individually.

Would it be possible to look into a solution for this? We would really appreciate your support.

Thank you!

    Hello.

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, the unresponsive "Hamburger" Menu in SharePoint Online on Android tablets is likely linked to a recent UI update or compatibility issue affecting touch input in the browser.

In situations like this, I'd recommend:

    • Update the Android WebView and Chrome: SharePoint's web-based UI on Android relies on the system WebView or Chrome rendering. Ensure they are fully updated via the Google Play Store.
    • Test in another Browser.
    • Enable Modern Experience (if not already): From the site's settings > "Site Information" > "View all site settings" > "Manage Site Features" > enable Modern Lists and Libraries.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thank you for your reply.

I see that I don't have Modern Lists and Libraries.

Also, why do you say about the browser? We are using Sharepoint app.

    Hello again.

    Thanks for your update.

I appreciate the clarification regarding the use of the SharePoint Mobile App instead of the browser version, and the absence of Modern Lists and Libraries in your environment.

Regarding your question about the browser, the initial suggestion was based on a common scenario where Android tablets use the web browser to access SharePoint Online. Since you've confirmed that your team is using the SharePoint App, the issue may be related to how the app interacts with classic site elements, specifically, the "Hamburger" menu functionality in classic page layouts.

Unfortunately, the SharePoint App can inherit limitations from underlying classic experience, which may not always respond to touch as expected. At the moment, swiping remains the primary gesture to expose the menu when it's unresponsive to taps.

We've escalated similar cases and will keep monitoring for improvements to the SharePoint app's UI behavior on Android. In the meantime, you might consider guiding users on the swipe gesture as a temporary workaround.

Lastly, for further assistance, you can call our Support Team through the Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
