I have to open an Excel file twice for it to actually open

When I open an excel file first time it opens excel, but does not open the actual file.
If I open the same file second time, it opens correctly.
Essentially, I have to open an excel file twice of it to actually open.
I've tried to do some research, but couldn't find anything that makes sense.

Hi @NadeemAhmadMA-4625,
Welcome to Q&A forum!
Which version of Office are you using?
Please try to modify the following registry key to check this issue.

  • Type Run in Windows search bar, press Enter. Then type regeidt in the Run box and press Enter to open Registry Editor.

  • Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\command, double-click (default) to append "%1" to the end of the Value data or replace /dde with "%1". (Double quotes are also included, and don't change the original other data. )

The following is my test result in Office 365, please check.

If the above key does not work, please check the methods in the following 2 articles are helpful.
Excel opening blank
Double-clicking an Office file fails to open it in the correct Office program
Any updates, please let me know.

Update:

For repairing Office, please navigate to Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features, then select the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, click Change. If there is "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" prompted, please click Yes. Select Online Repair and click Repair.

HI @VikiJi-MSFT

Thank you for the comment.
I tried everything including the additional links you suggested. But no improvements.
My problem is not limited to a particular file. Any file I want to open, I should open twice to actually to get it open.

Hi @NadeemAhmadMA-4625,
Thanks for your reply and sharing.

Please provide the detailed version of Office so that we can further analyze this issue: open the Excel and go to File>Account to check the version under the Product Information.
And I have the following information want to confirm with you at your convenience.

  • Is the blank screen displayed when double-clicking it for the first time? Are thre any error messages? Please share the screenshot with us.

  • When does this issue occured? Have you install any other third-party programs or updates before this issue? Such as, third-party Add-ins or Office updates.
If so, please uninstall them to check.

  • If you open the Excel app first, and then open Excel files from the Open tab, will this issue occur?

  • Where did you save these files? Local or OneDrive? Do Word documents and PPT presentations have this issue?

Please try to repair your Office to check again.
Any updates, please let me know.

Hi @NadeemAhmadMA-4625,
Thanks for your reply and sharing!

According to your description, this does not rule out the issue caused by the update of other software, I suggest you uninstall the update to check it.

For repairing Office, please navigate to Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features, then select the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, click Change. If there is "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" prompted, please click Yes. Select Online Repair and click Repair.
