How do I unlock a file?

I am new to Microsoft Word.

I am trying to edit a file but it is locked.

How do I unlock it?

John has given you good advice.

That said there are a bunch of ways of locking a file.

If his method did not work for you, write back and someone may still be able to help.

On the other hand, if it requires a password and you do not have it, this is not the place to get advice on breaking passwords.

You are running Word on a smaller monitor that doesn't display all the commands. Click on Protect, then on Restrict Editing.

Even with the supposed compatibility and using the .docx format, converted documents are often problematic. If, in Open Office, you can create a sample that has the same problem that you do not mind sharing, you could save it on OneDrive or Dropbox and post a link here. Someone will look at it and perhaps have more guidance for you.

Choose Review>Restrict Editing and click on the Stop Protection button. If Word asks for a password, enter it and click on OK.
