I have a user that is getting the following error when trying to access either her email on 365 or one website on our company Intranet:
Message: AADSTS5000611: Symmetric Key Derivation Function version 'KDFV1' is invalid. Update the device for the latest updates.
Her workstation is Windows 10 and there is not enough disk space on it to upgrade it to 22H2. However, I was able to get the latest patches for the version of the OS that she is running. She's still getting the error.
Is there a patch that I could download and run to correct this problem without having to do an entire Windows version update?

The “Symmetric Key Derivation Function version ‘KDFV1’ is invalid” error means that your device or software is trying to use an older and now unsupported cryptographic algorithm called KDFv1 for key derivation. A key derivation function (KDF) is a security algorithm used to generate encryption keys from a secret source like a password or master key. KDFv1 is an older version that Microsoft is phasing out for security reasons, so newer updates might reject it to keep your system safe.
To resolve this, your device needs to move to a more current supported version of the key derivation function, which often means installing the latest Windows updates or security patches. 2025-07-24T15:10:23.05+00:00 Thanks. I did update to the latest patches for the version of the OS that she currently has. In order to get to 22H2, however would take 10GB of space. There is less than 2GB available. I guess we'll just have to figure something out. Thanks for your help.

2025-08-01T14:22:51.9666667+00:00 When I checked for individual patches, it appeared that I would need to apply at least two. However, I had trouble figuring out which ones to use. In the meantime, we decided to simply delete and re-create the user and re-create the VM to get the user back running. When we did that, the problem was still there for Outlook 2019, but nothing else. Since we're moving away from 2019 anyway, we've decided to uninstall it and replace it with 365. So, we never actually solved the problem.
