A password protected Word document that is used every day refuses to save to OneDrive. I save it over and over and then click the "close" X and it works and works and works but refuses to save to the cloud. The internet suggests a lot of nonsense like check your internet connection. My software is all up to date. Good internet. Same browser as in the past. Tried different bowser and it still happens. Problem is becoming more and more frequent. I have used this same document for probably more than a decade and it always had a very rare issue but now it is so bad I am considering alternatives to Office365. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

For OneDrive to be able to open a password-protected file (of any kind), the password would also have to be stored in OneDrive. That's a bad idea if your account is compromised. And most people would be aghast to let Microsoft know their passwords. Plus: encrypting the file prevents OneDrive from scanning, indexing and syncing the file.

    Hi William,

I understand how frustrating this must be when you can't upload a specific file or document to OneDrive, especially with a document you've used for years.

Since internet, browser, and updates aren’t the issue, let’s look at possible causes for why a password-protected Word file won’t save to OneDrive: Just to clarify, is there an error code? or is this a personal or work account?

    Here are possible causes.

Encryption conflicts: Older .doc formats or password protection may interfere with syncing.

File path or name issues: Special characters or long paths can block uploads.

    We can Try these troubleshooting:

Option 1: Check OneDrive sync status: Right-click the icon → View sync problems.

Move the file locally: Edit/save outside OneDrive, then re-upload.

Save As a new file: Rename and save as .docx.

Remove/reapply password: Temporarily remove it, save, then reapply.

Option 2: Repair Office: Settings → Apps → Microsoft 365 → Modify → Quick Repair.

Clear Office cache: Delete contents of %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache.

Option 3: Check file path length: Keep it under 255 characters.
