How to stop comments icon from appearing when text is highlighted

How do I stop the comments icon from appearing whenever I highlight text?

    Hi @Joan DelFattore

    Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.    

    Based on your description, I understand that you want to turn off the Modern comments icon in word.  Please follow the below steps to turn off the icon:   

    In Word, on the File tab, select Options.     

    1. On the General tab, clear the checkbox next to Enable modern comments
    2. Restart Word.

    If you are referring to the Insert a Comment pop-up User's image which displays as you select text, there is no way to get rid of it.

    I recommend that you send feedback to Microsoft regarding this. Use Help > Feedback from within the program or use the web portal at https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/forum/fb6d67e3-301c-ec11-b6e7-0022481f8472 .
