Teams - Teams and channels disappearing for no reason

There seems to be a bug in Teams creating the following issue.

When clicking on a Team or channel it disappears. If it's a channel, in the channel list for that team it is shown and not hidden but does not appear in the list of channels. If it's a Team it completely disappears. The only way to retrieve it is to exit from Teams view e.g. click on 'Chat' and then go back into Teams. The Team will then reappear.

We are using the separate view option of chats and Teams and this is happening to multiple users across the business. Sometimes it's fine, and then it happens for no reason.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a solution to this as it's impacting the confidence the business is having in the platform? Thanks

Hi @AW and all users who have reported to experience weird behavior while using Teams,

I have checked the issue and found out that it was related to an incident that have already been reported by the Microsoft engineering teams. Please see the below details:

    • Incidents: TM1139221
    • Title: Users may not be able to see the combined chat and channel view in Microsoft Teams
    • Affected Services: Microsoft Teams
    • Affected features: Teams components
    • Current status: Impairment of service
    • Further information: This issue mainly affects the Microsoft Teams desktop client. Users with access to the Microsoft Teams web client can use it to avoid the impact. Additionally, users can temporarily bypass this issue by clearing the cache of the desktop client. Some users have reported that they no longer have access to Teams channels due to this impact, as they don't see the icons in the left panel.
    • Troubleshooting Status: We have identified and disabled a recent configuration change that contains the bug that is causing this issue. We have contacted a sample of affected users and confirmed recovery after reverting this configuration. Logs and telemetry data continue to confirm that the combined view of chat and channel is displayed correctly. We are monitoring telemetry to validate that the issue is fully resolved for all users.
    • Extent of impact: This issue can affect all users. Affected users may not see the combined chat and channel view in the UI, but rather the previous view.
    • Cause: This issue occurs because a recent change to the default settings contains an error.

I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this process. I will continue to review the information about this incident from the Microsoft engineering teams and update you on any progress.

I am having this same issue. I closed Teams using the task manager and then reopened it. Everything appeared briefly, then disappeared again. It is a systematic issue from Microsoft so we will probably have to wait for them to first acknowledge it isn't on the user side, then create a fix and roll out the update. Personally, really tired of Office issues and thinking of switching to Google Docs.

I was having the same issue but then checked my Outlook signin status and it was showing I needed to log back into Office 360. When I did, my channels and pinned favorites reappeared when I clicked "Chats".

Answers are below for what many of my colleagues are experiencing.

    1. Can you confirm if you're using the desktop app, web app, or mobile app when the issue occurs? confirmed the issues is in desktop and web app. unsure on mobile app.
    2. Have you tried switching views (e.g., going to Chat and back to Teams) to make the Team/channel reappear? yes, but it reverts within 5 minutes.
    3. Are there any error messages or logs you can share when the issue occurs? yes, I have a video capture that I can share privately with Microsoft.
    4. Have you tried clearing Teams cache? yes, did not resolve the issue.
    5. If possible, could you send me the screenshot of when the Team/ channel disappears? impossible to screenshot because it doesn't show the issue and the reason why a colleague recorded a video.

Please also double check the Layout Settings if it was set properly.

    • Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner.
    • Go to Settings > Chats and Channels.
    • Ensure "Viewing chats, Teams and channels" is set to Separate.
    • Also, kindly disable filters and discovery options under the same section
    • Can you confirm if you're using the desktop app, web app, or mobile app when the issue occurs?
    • Have you tried switching views (e.g., going to Chat and back to Teams) to make the Team/channel reappear?

    Hi @AW

Good day! Welcome to Q&A forum!

To better understand the issue, please clarify the following questions:

    1. Can you confirm if you're using the desktop app, web app, or mobile app when the issue occurs?
    2. Have you tried switching views (e.g., going to Chat and back to Teams) to make the Team/channel reappear?
    3. Are there any error messages or logs you can share when the issue occurs?
    4. Have you tried clearing Teams cache?
    5. If possible, could you send me the screenshot of when the Team/ channel disappears?

In the meantime, try uninstalling and reinstalling Teams to see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists after trying all the given instructions, Microsoft’s support team will need to step in. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

If you are an Office 365 Global Admin, please create a service request with Microsoft support. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

If you’re not the Admin and unsure who the Global Admin is within your organization, you can find guidance on locating them here: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.

Looking forward to your updates, then I will provide you with further supporting steps.
