Accessing Word Documents After Office 365 Renewal

Is the Home and Student retail version still functional? If Office 365 is given up, will access to .docx documents created previously and stored on OneDrive be maintained, considering the primary usage is only for Word?

If your Microsoft 365 subscription ends or is canceled:

  • You can still access and open your Word (.docx) files stored on OneDrive, and there’s no lockout.

You’ll be able to view or download them using the OneDrive website or mobile app.

You can also open and edit them in Word Online for free, which is great for basic use.

If you have the Office Home & Student retail license installed, it will continue to work permanently on the device where it was activated.

You’ll still have access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with no subscription needed.

  • Ensure you're signed in with the Microsoft account associated with your license.
  • Your files on OneDrive will remain accessible as long as you don’t exceed the free storage limit once your 365 plan ends.

Yes, your files are safe, and you can continue using Word normally with Home & Student.

    You can use the online apps in your web browser with a free Microsoft account. Go to https://onedrive.live.com and sign in.

    If you want the full versions of certain apps, you can get the current perpetual (one-time purchase) version of Office for home use which is called Office Home 2024. It is for one computer (PC or Mac) and one user, and it includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Note that it does not include Outlook or online storage.
