    Dear David Hutton

Thanks for reaching out! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A. I'm Haien from Microsoft Q&A.

Thanks for reaching out with your question about registering your Dell Inspiron 5593 on your Microsoft account. The "We didn't recognize this serial number" issue is not a bug or a problem with your Dell PC. It is a fundamental design of the Microsoft account device registration page, which is meant for managing Microsoft's own hardware products for warranty and service purposes. The "Register a device" option on the Microsoft account website is specifically designed for Microsoft-branded hardware, like Surface devices, Xbox consoles, and their accessories. Since your Dell PC is manufactured by a different company, its serial number won't be recognized in that system.

To provide the most accurate solutions, could you clarify:

    • Where are you finding the serial number, you’re entering? (e.g., sticker on the laptop, BIOS, or command prompt output)
    • Are you signed into Windows with the same Microsoft account you’re trying to register the device with?

From that situation, I highly recommend you try these workarounds:
Solution 1: Sign In with Microsoft Account to Automatically Register Device

    • On your Dell PC, press the Windows key + I to open Settings > AccountsYour info.
    • If you see the option to "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" > click on it and follow the on-screen instructions to sign in with your Microsoft account email and password.
    • Wait a few minutes, then visit https://account.microsoft.com/devices > check if your Dell Inspiron 5593 appears under “Devices.” If it doesn’t appear, restart your laptop and check again after signing in.

Solution 2: Verify and Correct Serial Number

    • Check the physical sticker on the bottom of your Dell Inspiron 5593 for the Service Tag. If you don't have, please open Command Prompt > Run as Administrator > Type these following commands and press Enter to see the output**:** wmic bios get serialnumber
    • If the sticker and command output differ, contact Dell Support to update the BIOS serial number
    • Try registering again at https://account.microsoft.com/devices using the Service Tag, though manual registration may still fail for non-Microsoft devices.
