Urgent: How to Keep My Skype Number and Credit After Skype Retirement

Hello,

I have a paid Skype Number and some remaining Skype Credit. I recently received an email saying my Skype Number will be deactivated in 2 days.

Could you please let me know:

How can I keep my Skype Number active (or transfer it to Microsoft Teams or another service) so I don’t lose it?

What will happen to my remaining Skype Credit, and how can I continue using it after Skype’s retirement?

This is urgent as the number is very important to me, and I want to make sure both the number and the credit are not lost.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

My Skype number expires on Feb 23. I initiated a port from another provider on Feb 20 which may take 5-7business days. My Skype number needs to be active for the port to process. Even though my Skype number expires for me to use, does it remain active with Skype for the port process to complete? Thanks

    Dear @FFM,

Good day! Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may encounter when using our services/ products. Based on your description, kindly try these following steps: Port Your Skype Number to Another Provider

You can transfer your Skype Number to a new VoIP provider before it’s deactivated. Providers like FlyNumber, KrispCall, and Phonely offer free or low-cost porting services:

    • FlyNumber: Free porting for most countries (except Switzerland)
    • KrispCall: Fast transfer in 7 days, with free US/UK/Canada numbers during porting
    • Phonely: Ideal for personal/home users, guides you through the porting process

Use Skype Number via Microsoft Teams Free

If you prefer to stay within Microsoft’s ecosystem:

    • Sign in to Microsoft Teams Free using your Skype credentials.
    • Your Skype Number will remain active until the end of your current subscription.
    • You’ll receive calls via the Skype Dial Pad in Teams Free or the Skype web portal.

Your Skype Credit is still usable, but there are important limitations:

    How to Use It

    • Use the Skype Dial Pad in Teams Free or at calling.web.skype.com.
    • You can make international calls, send SMS, or renew subscriptions until your credit runs out.

    Reactivating Expired Credit

If your credit has expired due to inactivity (180+ days), you can:

    • Sign in at secure.skype.com/my/account.
    • Look for the “Reactivate Credit” option.
    • If it’s missing, try clearing your browser cache or switching browsers.

Refunds are generally not available unless the credit was purchased within the last 14 days and unused.

    Note:

You can still migrate your Skype data (contacts, chat history) to Teams Free until January 2026.

If you encounter issues, contact Skype Support directly via Microsoft Support.

Unfortunately, Skype Numbers can no longer be renewed. If you want to keep this number then you should try to port this number to another provider.

Your remaining Skype Credit can still be used on Skype Dial Pad site, but you will not be able to add more balance to your credit.
