Missing OneDrive context menu items in Windows Explorer (Win11)

Hi,

-Windows 11 Pro 24H2, current-channel for updates so latest (64bit) OneDrive

For a few weeks now I've been missing context-menu items relating to OneDrive in Windows Explorer. Sometimes "keep on device"/"free up space" are present but no others, presently there are no OneDrive options at all.

OneDrive is running normally and (in the system tray) showing all synched. Sometimes restarting the app fixes it but this is not a sustainable solution. Today restarting is having no effect.

A previous post about this suggested deleting to registry values but they're not present when I look in regedit. A more recent post has the unhelpful "raise a ticket" answer which we know is rarely ever useful and takes ages. As such I'd like to ask if anyone else has solved this recently as a quick glance around the web suggests it's not an isolated problem.

I've been having this issue off and on for months, but usually restarting the shell would suffice (ie log out then log on again, or kill every instance of explorer.exe then restart it) so I just lived with it. While waiting for a solution, we did get a new icon for OneDrive, and that's better than nothing.

Unfortunately today the usual tricks wouldn't work, so I ended up here, and started following Quinnie Quoc's post dated 8 Sept, that unusually for these forums did contain some actual suggestions.

The usual OneDrive /reset dance was nice (it seems to be working better now than in years past) but did nothing to fix the problem (that is, explorer.exe plainly not loading the OneDrive shell extension; I know it is naive to expect a /reset to also reinstall the shell extensions, but hey, I had to try).

So I navigated to the regedit (thanks Quinnie) and saw that

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

was missing the OneDrive key. I wasn't really into uninstalling and reinstalling OneDrive (again - didn't fix anything last time so why should it work this time?) so I looked for the one thing that Quinnie's post fails to mention ie the OneDrive CLSID.

    Fortunately my favorite search engine quickly found out that it's {A3B3D3B0-1B3C-4B3D-8B3C-3B3D3B3D3B3D}

I put that in the (default) value and restarted explorer.exe.

    Job done.

In my case, along with using the OneDrive /reset, I also had to delete the entire OneDrive folder from my user profile folder and also uninstall OneDrive, restart machine and then reinstall it. That's what fixed it for me.

I just spent my Sunday in a marathon session with Copilot in Edge (finally successful). The AI led me down a long path of looking for conflicting extensions, such as from Acrobat. After many many experiments, Copilot finally agreed that the problem was a corrupted installation of Onedrive. Copilot says this probably happened when I unknowingly interrupted an automatic update of Onedrive. So finally, Copilot had me kill onedrive processes, run a powershell command to uninstall, then kill more processes to be able to delete the whole "Microsoft Onedrive" folder, then reinstall Onedrive from an MS installer on a web site. Throughout my Sunday, I ran a onedrive reset three separate times, with 82000 changes to be processed, which takes a couple hours each time. The reset itself was probably necessary once (after the reinstall).

The full reinstall fixed the issue. It's a little tricky as stated above, but it solved the problem. I do not have a onedrive key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. I do have M365 Premium (consumer version, not an enterprise version). Copilot is too smart for its own good, I could have saved a lot of time by just reinstalling first (not just a reset). That's a heavyweight solution, but it's easier than using ShellExView to disable file extensions.

    Hi CB57,

We understand the frustration caused by the missing OneDrive context menu items in Windows Explorer, especially when restarting the app no longer resolves the issue. This behavior has been reported by other users running Windows 11 Pro 24H2 on the current update channel, and it appears to be a known issue under investigation.

In the meantime, we recommend the following steps:

Ensure that Files On-Demand is enabled in OneDrive settings.

Run a repair on OneDrive by executing %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset from the Run dialog.

Confirm that the Shell extensions for OneDrive are registered correctly. You can do this by checking the registry path: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\OneDrive If missing, a reinstall of OneDrive may help restore these entries.

Microsoft is actively working to address compatibility issues introduced in 24H2. You can follow updates and community solutions on the Microsoft Q&A thread discussing this issue.

Please let us know if you’d like assistance with any of the steps above.

    Best regards,

    Quinnie Quoc.

Been having same issue - I found this resource: https://www.guidingtech.com/fix-onedrive-not-showing-in-windows-file-explorer/ and did the restart windows explorer fix and it did resolve the issue, maybe a reboot would also resolve it, but that's a pain to do when you're in the middle of stuff. We also shouldn't have to do this sort of thing - it should just work !
