MS Teams is stuck in a "install new version of teams" loop

Several users in my office are suddenly getting the same issue. When they try to run Teams it tells them to download the new version of Teams. When you click on the button it doesn't appear to do anything however after several seconds the screen changes and shows the user's name and email address for their Teams account. When they click on that and try to run Teams it takes them back to the download screen. Attempts to install Teams from the network results in the following error message:

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered.

AppxManifest.xml(1116,10): error 0x80070032: Cannot register the MSTeams_25212.2204.3869.2204_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe package because the following error was encountered

while registering the windows.shareTarget extension: The request is not supported.

. Try again and contact the package publisher if the problem persists.

    Hi @Cohen, Paul,

It's wonderful news that the issue has been resolved. I sincerely apologize for any confusion earlier, and I truly appreciate your persistence in identifying the solution. I believe many users may encounter a similar issue, and your case could serve as a valuable reference for them.

Therefore, I’ve summarized this post so that other forum members can easily find helpful information here:

    Issue Description:

Several users encountered an issue where launching Microsoft Teams prompted them to download the new version. However, clicking the download button appeared to do nothing. After a delay, the screen would display the user's name and email address, but attempting to proceed would loop them back to the download screen.

Attempts to install Teams from the network resulted in the following error:

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered.

AppxManifest.xml(1116,10): error 0x80070032: Cannot register the MSTeams package because the following error was encountered while registering the windows.shareTarget extension: The request is not supported.

    Assessment:

Initial checks confirmed that Group Policy settings were not the cause, especially since the issue persisted even when logged in with an Administrator account (which bypasses GPOs).

    Resolution:

The issue was resolved after installing the latest Windows updates. Once the system was fully updated, the Teams update completed successfully.

    More Information:
The latest Windows update (KB5065426, September 2025) includes key fixes that help resolve Microsoft Teams installation loop issues. It addresses registry conflicts caused by misconfigured Group Policy settings, ensures required runtime components are present, and improves overall system stability. These updates allow the new Teams client to install successfully on systems that previously failed due to outdated components or legacy installers.

As other users will also search for information in this community, your valuable vote will definitely help others with similar queries find the correct solution more quickly.

Greatly appreciate your patience and understanding once again.

As it turns out we checked all of that and nothing was wrong with the policy. Additionally, we logged in with the Administrator account so none of the GPs were applied to that account and still encountered the same error. It was not until we installed the latest Windows updates that the Teams update completed successfully. It appears that was the answer.

    Hi @Cohen, Paul,

Thanks for sharing the detailed error.

The issue you're encountering where Microsoft Teams is stuck in a loop prompting users to install the new version, followed by a failed installation has been reported by others and is linked to a few key causes.

    1. Group Policy Restrictions Certain registry keys or Group Policy settings may block the installation of the new Teams MSIX package. Specifically:
      • BlockNonAdminUserInstall
      • AllowAllTrustedApps
        1. Corrupted Local Teams Data Residual or corrupted Teams files in %LocalAppData% or %AppData% can cause installation loops.
        2. Antivirus or Firewall Interference Security software may block the installation or registration of certain components like windows.shareTarget
        3. Old Machine-Wide Installer Conflicts If an older version of the Teams Machine-Wide Installer is present, it may prevent proper installation of the new version.

Based on the documentation currently available, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can follow to address this issue:

    1. Check and Update Group Policy Settings
    • Open gpedit.msc and navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App Package Deployment
    • Ensure these are set to Not Configured:
      • Prevent non-admin users from installing packaged Windows apps
        • Allow all trusted apps to install
    1. Clean Up Teams Data
    • Delete folders from:
      • %LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
        • %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams
        • Restart the system and try reinstalling.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
