A cloud-based service included in Microsoft 365, delivering scalable messaging and collaboration features with simplified management and automatic updates.
Hi @Raymond Brooks,
Thank you for reaching out and asking about using POP3 in Outlook with a Microsoft 365 Business account. We would like to provide the official information from Microsoft as follows:
- POP3 with Modern Authentication is not supported in Outlook on Windows.
- Since late 2022, Microsoft has ended support for Basic Authentication for Exchange Online. Therefore, Outlook on Windows cannot connect via POP3 without Basic Auth.
- Although Exchange Online now supports OAuth 2.0 for POP3/IMAP, Outlook does not support OAuth for these protocols with regular accounts.
- Microsoft has confirmed: “There are no plans for Outlook to support OAuth for POP and IMAP.”
To ensure stable and secure connectivity, we recommend:
- Using native Exchange connection in Outlook: Simply add your Microsoft 365 account using your email address, and Outlook will automatically use the Exchange protocol (MAPI/EWS) with Modern Authentication. You’ll have full access to email, calendar, contacts, and advanced features.
Notes on Limitations
- Outlook does not support multi-factor authentication (MFA) with POP/IMAP.
- The new Outlook (One Outlook) does not support POP accounts.
- SMTP Auth with Basic Auth will be fully deprecated by April 2026.
