We had a customer who did not migrate MariaDB for azure before the 9/20 shutdown. How do we help them access the automated backups.

    hi Doug Hayes,

the azure database for mariadb service was officially retired on september 19, 2024. when a service is fully retired, microsoft decommissions the underlying infrastructure, including the servers and the automated backups.

if the customer did not migrate their data before the shutdown, and they did not explicitly export their backups to a long term storage location, the data is almost certainly gone. retired means the resources have been permanently deleted.

the customer's only possible hope is to check if they configured long-term backup retention before the retirement. this would have copied the backups to an azure storage account that they own and control. they should immediately check all of their azure storage accounts for any containers that might contain mariadb backup files.

if they find a storage account with backups, they can use those files to restore to a different database service, like azure database for mysql flexible server.

if they do not have any backups in their own storage, the data is unrecoverable. this is a devastating scenario, and i am truly sorry for your customer.

for any future migrations, it's a universal best practice to always take a final manual backup and store it independently before a service retirement deadline.

    regards,

    Alex
