Dear @JC,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A Forum!
I completely understand your need to have students land directly on the Classwork tab instead of the General chat when they log into Microsoft Teams via the web app on Chromebooks. This would certainly streamline their learning experience.
Let me explain that currently, Microsoft Teams does not include a built-in setting that allows teachers or admins to change the default tab from Posts (General chat) to another tab such as Classwork or Home page when students first access a Class Team. This is a design limitation of Teams at this time.
Since your students are using Chromebooks and cannot install the desktop app, my suggestion is to use a direct link (deep link) to the Classwork tab or leverage the new Home page feature:
1. Use a Direct Link (Recommended for Classwork)
- How to create:
- Open the Class Team in the web app.
- Click on the Classwork tab.
- Copy the full URL from your browser’s address bar.
- How to share:
- Provide this link to students via email or your LMS.
- Alternatively, set it as a bookmark on their Chromebook browser.
This link will open Teams directly on the Classwork tab, bypassing the General chat.
2. Utilize the Home Page
- Every new Class Team includes a Home page tab next to Posts.
- You can customize this page to display key elements like Assignments, Schedule, and Resources.
- Encourage students to click Home page for a more organized view of class content.
We appreciate your dedication to creating an efficient learning environment for your students. We recommend submitting feedback to the Microsoft Teams development team:
- Visit the https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback.
- Suggest adding a feature to set a default tab for Class Teams.
Your feedback helps us prioritize improvements for education users.
Best Regards.
