Hey everyone,
I’m having an issue with my Samsung T7 SSD on my Windows 11 PC — it’s only connecting at USB 2.0 speeds (480 Mb/s) no matter what I do. On my MacBook, the exact same drive and cable transfer a 75 GB file in around 2 minutes (~900 MB/s), but on Windows it takes about 30 minutes (~42 MB/s).
Here’s my setup:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B650I AORUS Ultra (latest BIOS)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- External Drive: Samsung T7 (Firmware FXG42P2Q, up to date)
- Internal Drives: Western Digital Black SN770 & SN850x; Crucial P3 Plus
- OS: Windows 11 Pro (fully updated)
- Cable: USB-C to USB-C cable supporting 10G+
- Port: Rear USB-C port directly on the motherboard (labeled 10Gbps / USB 3.2 Gen 2) also into the front IO
- File system: exFAT
What I’ve tried so far:
Installed the latest AMD chipset drivers from Gigabyte’s website
Installed the latest ITE USB driver
Verified BIOS is up to date
Flipped and reseated the USB-C cable
Tried another certified USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable
Updated T7 firmware using Samsung Magician
Checked Device Manager (shows “AMD USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller – 1.20 (Microsoft)”)
- Samsung Magician still reports:
Interface: USB 2.0 PC Max: USB 3.2 / Slot Max: USB 2.0 / Drive Max: USB 3.0
So it seems like Windows is only negotiating the drive at USB 2.0, even though the motherboard port itself supports 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and works fine with other devices.
Any idea what could be causing this, or how to make the T7 connect at full USB 3.2 speed?
Thanks in advance.
