Hi there,
For security reasons, Microsoft does not retain or have a master key to unlock password-protected Excel worksheets. The password is used to create an encryption key, and without the exact password, recovery by Microsoft is not possible.
However, there are a few methods you can attempt, depending on the version of Excel and the type of protection:
- For "Sheet" Protection (Prevents Editing): This is a weaker security measure. You may be able to remove it by copying the entire contents of the worksheet and pasting them into a new, unprotected sheet.
- For "Workbook" or File Open Password (Strong Encryption): This is much more secure. Your primary option is to use a third-party password recovery tool. These tools often work by using "brute-force" or "dictionary" attacks to guess the password. Please be cautious and only use reputable software from trusted sources.
- Leverage Backups: I always recommend checking if you have a recent backup of the file, either from your OneDrive/SharePoint version history, a local backup drive, or an email attachment you sent earlier, which might be an unprotected version.
I hope one of these methods helps you regain access to your data. For future critical files, I recommend using a password manager to securely store such passwords.
If this guidance was helpful, please feel free to mark it as "useful" 😊.
Best regards,
VP
