Hi everyone,

Trying to install KB5066791 and KB5066747 (Oct 2025 cumulative update) on Windows 10 Home 22H2 build 19045.6396. Always fails with error 0x80071A2D.

I already did a full clean reset (catroot2, SoftwareDistribution, DISM cleanup, etc.).
System is enrolled for ESU updates. Tried both local account and Microsoft account — same result.

What I tried:
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver

rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
rd /s /q %windir%\System32\catroot2

net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start msiserver

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

wusa C:\tempupdate\windows10.0-kb5066791-x64.msu /quiet /norestart

Tried updating to KB5066130, and KB5066747 disappeared afterward.
Servicing Stack (SSU) = 19041.6449.1.3.
DISM/SFC = success, but update still fails.

The update did work on a Windows 10 Home 22H2 build 19041.6456

Anyone else getting 0x80071A2D on ESU-enrolled Windows 10 Home 22H2? Any fix?

Thank you

I was able to fix it on my end, here were my steps.

    • Windows update with KB5066791 ready to be installed and asking for reboot
    • Shift+Restart (normal restart, not restart+update) to enter in recovery and choose the option to boot into safe mode
    • Booted in safe mode, didn't really do anything, choose the option to reboot
    • Update started by it self before the reboot
    • It went through fine and after a couple of reboots I was back in Windows with the update done

I guess some sort of service is affecting the possibility to run the update, but this worked out for me.

Hi William, Thanks for posting here on Microsoft community, here’s what you can do.

First, try to run Windows Update Troubleshooter, Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Update

Next, Clean Boot, temporarily disable all non-Microsoft services via msconfig → "Services" tab → check "Hide Microsoft services" → click "Disable all".

Also, Disable Antivirus & VPN, Some security tools block ESU updates

You can also try Manual Install via Update Assistant or Media Creation Tool, Download Update Assistant and run it to apply updates outside of WU, here’s the link.https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/windows-update-assistant-3550dfb2-a015-7765-12ea-fba2ac36fb3f

Also, Check the Internet & Disk Space, Ensure stable connection and at least 10GB free on C:\ drive.

You can try KB5066130 First, some users reported success after installing KB5066130, which made KB5066747 disappear possibly a prerequisite, You can download it directly from the https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5066130

    For reference, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/october-14-2025-kb5066130-cumulative-update-for-net-framework-3-5-and-4-8-1-for-windows-10-version-21h2-and-windows-10-version-22h2-20650704-471a-4ce6-96b7-f6719fc39fda

I hope this helps you out.

I ran the troubleshooter, no issues detected.
I tried disabling all non-Microsoft services, still doesn’t work.
I downloaded the update manually, but it doesn’t seem to install: it doesn’t appear in my update history or uninstall menu, and it’s still listed in Windows Update.
    KB5066130 installed and worked.

I also made a post on Reddit, and it seems a lot of people have the same issue.

Also having same error... unable to install this on my Windows 10 Pro v22H2.

I'm trying to fix this without having to run an in-place restore... which shouldn't be neccessary for a Windows Update that seems to be effecting many.

Things I've tried (that resulted in the same error on reboot, with forced rollback):

    • Normal Windows Update to install KB5066791
    • Download KB5066791 Update from the Microsoft Catalog, and manually install
    • sfc /scannow and all of the DISM repair commands
    • Re-register all Windows-Update related DLL files.
    • Run Windows Update troubleshooter.

CBS.log shows the following point in which errors begin being thrown:
