I downloaded the Office 2024 and followed the instructions through to activation.... but when I open a simple Word Doc it tells me it can't be activated due to maximum number of activations. New computer, Office 365 deleted off it, newly purchased Office 2024. What is the hang up?

Hi Liz Schuur, I know how frustrating it is when you’ve done everything right new computer, fresh install, activated Office 2024 and it still won’t let you use Word.

The error about “maximum number of activations” means your product key has already been used too many times, possibly on other devices or under a different Microsoft account.

First, go to account.microsoft.com and sign in. Under Services & subscriptions, check that Office 2024 is listed and linked to your account. If it’s not there, you may have activated it under a different account.

Second, open Word and go to File > Account > Change Product Key. Try re-entering your Office 2024 key.

Third, download the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant. It’s designed to fix activation issues automatically. Choose Office > I have problems activating Office.

Last, if the key has truly hit its limit, contact Microsoft support. They may be able to reset the activation count if you provide your product key, proof of purchase, and Microsoft account email.

Let me know how it goes. If this helps, please mark the answer as accepted so others can find it easily.

    Best,
    Carl
