It sounds like your Normal style may have been changed to italic. In the Home>Style Gallery, does it look italic?
How to stop first letter from italisizing when I place curser in a new line.
When I am writing in Microsoft Word, if I just keep writing, it is good but if I move my cursor to anothe spot, it always defaults to italics. It is a fairly recent problem but I can not figure out how to fix it on my own.

Do the following: In the Font dialog box (Ctrl+D), specify the font and size you want. Also ensure that "Regular" is selected in the Font Style list. Click the Set as Default button. When prompted, choose to modify "this document only."
