PowerBI learning module 11 of "Get Data in PowerBI": https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/modules/get-data/lab-prepare
I have followed the instructions but the data file will not download in the virtual / lab machine, but only on my local drive. When I go to do the exercises, I can only access the drives in the virtual machine, which are empty. I have done the following:

  1. Signed in
  2. Clicked on "Download Lab Files to D:\ drive" and got the "Success" message
  3. Attempted to do the following:
"Get started with Power BI Desktop
To complete this exercise, first open a web browser and enter the following URL to download the zip folder: https://github.com/MicrosoftLearning/PL-300-Microsoft-Power-BI-Data-Analyst/raw/Main/Allfiles/Labs/01-get-data-in-power-bi/01-get-data.zip
Extract the folder to the C:\Users\Student\Downloads\01-get-data folder.

Open the 01-Starter-Sales Analysis.pbix file."
However, it does not download within the virtual / lab machine but only on my local drive, so I can't continue with the lab within the virtual machine. How to save it within the virtual machine or allow the virtual machine to access my local drive?

The lab environment is a Virtual machine in a browser, and you need to use the browser inside the VM

So you need to copy the URL for the files to the browser in the VM and then it will download to the VM

All the files can be found on the GitHub repo https://github.com/MicrosoftLearning/PL-300-Microsoft-Power-BI-Data-Analyst
