Dear Joshua Pakdel
Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.
I understand how frustrating it is to get a fantastic new 300Hz monitor only to be greeted by constant stuttering and frame drops during gameplay on your Windows 10 PC. This is a common issue when upgrading to extremely high refresh rate displays, as it introduces new performance and synchronization challenges for your system.
To help narrow down the cause and get you the smoothest experience possible, could you please confirm two things for me?
- Which specific Graphics Card (GPU) model are you using (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT)?
- Are you using G-Sync or FreeSync (Adaptive Sync) on your new monitor, and is it currently enabled?
- Game name? Single/dual monitor? Screenshot of Task Manager during stutter (Ctrl+Shift+Esc > Performance)?
- Could you please confirm if you've tried adjusting the refresh rate and frame rate limit settings already?
In the meantime, you can consider trying my suggestions for Windows 11 as the newest Windows version and please let me know anything news from it:
- Ensure your Windows Power Plan is set to High Performance or the Ultimate Performance mode (if available) to prevent the CPU/GPU from downclocking during gameplay. Ensure that V-Sync's set correctly in both the game settings and your graphics control panel. Sometimes, enabling V-Sync can help with tearing and stuttering. Close any unnecessary background applications that might be using CPU or GPU resources while gaming.
- Right-click desktop > Display settings > Advanced display settings > Select your monitor > Choose 300Hz (or highest stable) under Refresh rate. If it feels off, try 240Hz temporarily
- Download latest from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel site (not Windows Update) > Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode first for a clean install > Restart and test
- Close overlays (Discord, etc.), Xbox Game Bar (Win+G > Settings > Off). If dual monitors, match refresh rates or disconnect secondary during tests
