A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
Hello Anthony Marenghi,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!
I understand that you have confusion when trying to restore OneDrive. That's very understandable and believe me you're not alone. I am here to help you out.
For your concern, let me break it down for you:
1. Can you restore OneDrive to a previous date without Microsoft 365?
- No, the Files Restore feature (which lets you roll back your entire OneDrive to any point in the last 30 days) is only available for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
- Without 365, you can only:
- Recover files from the Recycle Bin (if deleted within 30 days).
- Restore individual previous versions of files (if version history is enabled).
2. If you buy Microsoft 365 now, can you restore retrospectively?
- Yes, but only for the last 30 days from today. Once you activate 365, you can use OneDrive Files Restore to roll back your entire OneDrive to any date within the past 30 days.
- If the data loss happened more than 30 days ago, this method won’t help.
Therefore, my suggestion for you is:
Option 1: Buy Microsoft 365 and Use OneDrive Files Restore
- Purchase Microsoft 365
- Go to Microsoft 365 Plans.
- Choose a plan (Personal or Family).
- Complete payment and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Verify Subscription
- Open Services & Subscriptions.
- Ensure your Microsoft 365 subscription is active.
- Access OneDrive Files Restore
- Go to OneDrive Online.
- Click Settings (gear icon) → Options → Restore your OneDrive.
- Select a date within the last 30 days (or use the activity slider).
- Confirm restore.
Option 2: Recover Individual Files Without 365
- Check OneDrive Recycle Bin
- Go to OneDrive Online.
- Click Recycle Bin on the left.
- Restore any deleted files (available up to 30 days).
- Restore Previous Versions
- Right-click the file → Version history.
- Select the version you want → Restore.
- Download Backup (if available)
- If you have local copies or backups, upload them back to OneDrive.
Important: Files Restore works only for the last 30 days after you activate Microsoft 365. If your deletion was on October 26, you’re still within the window.
I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to let me know if you have any further update.
Best Regards,
