Hi all,

HP TrueVision Camera – Code 45 Error After Insider Build

I’m running a recent Dev channel build on my HP Envy 17 and have encountered a recurring issue with the built-in TrueVision HD camera. After the update, Device Manager shows the camera under hidden devices with a Code 45 error (“The hardware device is not connected to the computer”).

I’ve managed to get it working a few times after full power resets, but it consistently fails again after waking from standby the next morning. I’ve tried driver reinstalls, BIOS checks, and troubleshooting — no luck. Rollback isn’t available as it’s been more than 10 days.

Would appreciate hearing from others with similar experiences or any workaround that’s worked for you. I’ve submitted feedback via the Feedback Hub as well.

Thanks, David

    Dear David Sims

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I appreciate you reaching out through the Windows Insider channels regarding your HP TrueVision Camera. Running Insider builds can sometimes surface unexpected compatibility challenges, especially with device hardware. The device manager error code 45 is primarily an informational message used when a non-Plug and Play device that was previously installed or connected to the computer is no longer detected by the operating system. In the context of a laptop's built-in webcam following a Windows Insider update, the potential causes revolve around a temporary loss of connection or initialization failure rather than a true physical disconnection.

    • May I ask what is your Windows Insider Version and Envy model (e.g., 17-ae0xx)?  You can check by going to Setting > System > About and provide to me a screenshot. Please make sure that you remove all personal information due to public forum as Microsoft Q&A.

Since you're on an Insider build (likely Windows 11), you can try my workaround in the meantime to check if it can work. Please keep me updated with anything new that you try so I can narrow the problem and provide to you more accurate solutions:

    • Power Cycle and Hardware Switch Check: Perform a "hard reset" (shutdown, unplug all peripherals, hold the power button for 15 seconds, then restart). Additionally, check your keyboard/laptop chassis for a physical camera privacy switch (often on the F-keys, side, or above the display).
    • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Select "Camera" and hit Run
    • Right-click Start > Device Manager > Click View > Show hidden devices > Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices) > Right-click HP TrueVision HD > Uninstall device (check "Delete the driver software" if prompted) > Restart your PC
    • Head to HP's site, enter your Envy 17 model > grab the latest camera driver (e.g., HP TrueVision HD) > Install and reboot.
    • In Device Manager > find the camera > right-click Properties > go to the Power Management tab > Uncheck the box that says, "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

As you are on the Dev Channel, some stability incidents are expected. Your feedback via the Feedback Hub is essential as it helps us identify and resolve these compatibility issues in future releases. When using Insider Preview, please note that this is pre-release software and may have potential bugs or incompatibilities. While Microsoft is always working to fix download issues, overall stability can be more unpredictable than a stable release. If these steps don't fix the issue, the most stable solution might be to roll back to a public release version of Windows 11 to avoid the specific bug in the Insider build you're on.

    • Download the latest stable Windows 11 ISO via this link: Download Windows 11
    • Once downloaded, right-click the ISO file > select "Mount." > On a virtual DVD drive > Run the setup.exe file from the mounted drive > Follow the on-screen prompts > choose "Keep personal files and apps."
    • After the repair upgrade is complete and your system is stable > re-enroll in the Insider Program and try downloading the preview build again.
