If an academic creates a PowerPoint and uses images from the stock photo library within PowerPoint then generates a video for the course from that PPT, is additional permission required beyond the Microsoft O365 licence?

    Dear @Shannon Oscroft,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand that you have questions regarding the licensing of stock content for educational videos created from PowerPoint. From my research, the core issue here revolves around the specific licensing terms Microsoft provides for the Stock Images, Icons, and Graphics used within Microsoft 365 (O365) applications like PowerPoint.

Under the terms of your active Microsoft 365 subscription, you are generally granted a perpetual, worldwide license to use the stock images, icons, and graphics with the content you create, including a video generated from the PowerPoint presentation, provided the use is within the scope of the license.

    • Microsoft states that you can use the stock media in documents, presentations, and other materials (including videos) you create. This includes using the material internally (for your university/course) and externally (e.g., distributing the educational video).
    • Perpetual License: Once you use the image in your final work (the video), the license for that specific use generally holds, even if your subscription expires later.
    • No Attribution Required: You do not need to provide specific credit to Microsoft or the original artist for using these stock images.
    • Educational Use: Using these images to create a course video is standard use and falls well within the granted license.

The only time you would need additional permission or a different license is if the use falls outside of the "content creation" scope. You cannot do the following:

    • Sell the Images Alone: You cannot download the images and sell them as stock photos, clip art, or digital wallpapers.
    • Claim Originality: You cannot claim the stock media files themselves as your own original work.
    • Use Outside of Microsoft Products: You must generally access and integrate the stock media through the Microsoft 365 interface (PowerPoint, Word, etc.).

Since the academic is creating an educational video based on their presentation, this use is covered by the standard Microsoft 365 license. No additional permission beyond the active O365 license is required.
