Outlook Classic not resizing preview pane on new laptop

Got a new laptop at the office. Didn't worry about size of panes on the computer. Got home and hooked it up to my big monitor. Now there's a problem.

I have the preview pane at the bottom. When it went to the large monitor, that takes up most of the space and the email list is small. Normal practices is to go to the line between the two and drag it down to expand the list and shrink the preview area. The problem is that's not working.

On my home computer, I started Outlook (still Classic) and the double bar to move the line is there.

Why would it not be there on my laptop and how do I get it back?

    Dear David
Welcome, and thank you for sharing your issue in the Q&A forum.
Based on the information you've provided, I understand you're experiencing difficulties when switching between your laptop screen and an external monitor, particularly with Outlook Classic. I'm truly sorry you're facing this inconvenience, but rest assured I'm here to help you find a solution.

Here are some troubleshooting steps I recommend:

    1. Resize the Outlook Window

    This simple fix often works:

    • Avoid using Outlook in full-screen mode.
    • Click the Restore Down button (the overlapping squares icon in the top-right corner).
    • Once Outlook is not maximized, try hovering your cursor over the boundary between the message list and the reading pane. The drag handle should reappear and become functional.
    • Adjust the reading pane size as needed, then you can maximize the window again.
    1. Reset the View

This restores the default layout for the current folder:

    • Go to the View tab.
    • In the Current View group, click Reset View.

    • Try adjusting the reading pane again.
    1. Change User Interface Options
    • Check and modify display optimization settings:
    • Go to File > Options > General.
    • Under User Interface options, try switching between:

Optimize for compatibility (if you're experiencing display issues).

Optimize for best appearance (for better visuals).

    • Click OK and restart Outlook.

    1. Run the Clean Views Command

If the above steps don’t work, this command resets all custom views:

    • Close Outlook completely.
    • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type: outlook.exe /cleanviews and press Enter.
    • Restart Outlook and check if the drag handle is restored.

    If the issue still persists:

    • Try switching the Reading Pane to the Right, then back to Bottom to reactivate the divider.
    • Check if Outlook is running in Compatibility Mode:
    • Right-click the Outlook shortcut > Properties > Compatibility tab.
    • Make sure compatibility mode is not enabled.
    • Ensure Windows Display Scaling (DPI) is set to a recommended level (100% or 125%).

I hope these steps are helpful to you. If you encounter any further issues, feel free to share I'm always ready to assist!
