App-V and OneDrive Desktop Backup

We're piloting OneDrive Backup (formerly Known Folder Move) and I've discovered an issue with publishing App-V shortcuts to the user desktop. When OneDrive backup is enabled for the Desktop folder, the directory C:\Users\<userprofile>\Desktop is migrated to C:\Users\<userprofile>\OneDrive\Desktop.

If an App-V package that is user published with a desktop shortcut is subsequently deployed, the shortcut is generated in C:\Users\<userprofile>\Desktop, but this folder is not presented to the user, they only see the items in the OneDrive folder so they don't see the shortcut.

I'm testing this on Windows 10 1909 with OneDrive 21.170.0822.0002

I can see documentation relating to App-V and Folder Redirection here but this was last updated in 2018 and there's no mention of OneDrive Backup. Is there a way to fix this issue so that App-V shortcuts are still presented on the user's desktop after enabling OneDrive backup?

    Hello @Stewart Pollock ,

    Thank you for your question.

I believe it is a problem related to the windows 10 1909 version (which we consider to be extremely old).

First I will describe to you how to update to the latest version of windows, without affecting your files or programs, after that you try to perform the configuration you are trying now and see if the problem persists or not.

Step 1: Access the above link and select the Update Now option, an application will be downloaded in which you must install on your computer.

Step 2: when installing you must open the application and the download, verification and installation of the recent version will start.

Step 3: After you will be asked to restart the device to complete the update, after a few minutes you will have the latest version.

If after updating to the latest version of windows the problem persists, I recommend that you post your question on the OneDrive forum, so you will have a better follow-up.

Once Onedrive is deployed, the problem is not obvious because the first synchronization is performed. Each subsequent App-V update package on the station will not bring new App-V shortcuts!

Test - You are synchronizing the desktop to Onedrive. Delete the App-V shortcut from the desktop. Perform an App-V synchronization such as Sync-AppvPublishingServer* -Force or Logout /login to Windows. You will not get the shortcut. Why?
Because App-V works with a variable, not a fixed path. OneDrive works with a fixed path. Unbelievable? Yes, it is.

    Hi Stewart,
for users with desktop sync to OneDrive, I added a shortcut view to Common Desktop. It seems to work for the new package as well as for updating the package. 246800-cmdsktp.png

    Hi Stewart,
Could you please post a scenario where shortcuts are missing when publishing apps updates? Can I also try it? If it doesn't keep you too busy. My email is

I've just repeated the same test on a Windows 10 21H2, 22H2 and Windows 11 22H2. Device and the behaviour is identical so this is not limited to 1909.
