how to check i have a valid product key

I have a new Windows 11 Pro product key. When i try to upgrade my Windows 11 Home computer to Windows 11 Pro entering this key it is rejected. How can I check that the new Windows 11 Pro product key is valid?

Hello,

There's no way to check if the product key is legit, even with third party app like ShowKey Plus, that can allow you to enter a key to check, it will not tell you if it has been used.

You also cannot use a pro product key on Home edition directly. You must use generic key to get Pro installed first, then use your product key to activate.

Here are the steps:

You can go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

Disconnect internet, and disable any third party antivirus, key in the generic key instead: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

That should get you to Pro. Once restarted, you can connect back to the internet, then you can use the Pro key that you have.

Thanks Emily, I had followed the instructions to enter the generic key first. The instructions you give are the same as those which came with the key. I bought the key from a seller with good reviews, so not really any reason to think the key was not genuine. However, I did notice that the type of key was a :MAK when I entered it on ShowKeyPlus which was not what I expected so getting a refund. I think the real problem might be my OEM installation.

I see. I do want to point out, MAK key is considered piracy when used as indiviual user.

It is a volume license. This is a violation of licensing terms actually if you are not an organization user within the organization that purchased this MAK key. Volume license is sold to organizations and it is meant to be used by the users within the organization it is sold to only. It cannot be resold to general consumers, Unfortunately a lot of third party vendors are doing it because it is a lot cheaper than retail license. Basically they paid volume license price, sell it to you for retail price, so they make a bigger profit. When it is discovered, that entire organization account can be voided by Microsoft, hence your key can end up no longer working. Additionally, a MAK license comes with an installation limit, which means a single key can only be used for a set number of installations upon agreement when setting up the org account, such as 100. If the key is sold to more than 100 users, or if a user reinstalls or changes hardware, each new installation counts against this limit. Exceeding the limit could deactivate the license on another device. Regardless, you shouldn't be using that MAK key at all.
