ESU is not working, instead I am asked to activate Windows. How do I fix error 0x803F700F?

I have a genuine Windows 10 Pro key that I have been using since 2019. My computer is enrolled in extended support. However after the computer has been turned on I get a notification to activate windows. In Settings>Activation I get the following error - Something prevented us from communicating with our activation servers. Wait a few minutes then try again. Error code: 0x803F700F.

Where did you get your Windows licence, did you purchase a full retail Windows licence from Microsoft or from a 3rd party retailer, and if so, do you have the product key?

Click your Start Button, type cmd then right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Run or paste this command and hit Enter:

slmgr.vbs /dlv

Please post a screenshot of the resulting dialog

Download the free ShowKeyPlus app from the Microsoft Store.

On the that app, click 'Check Edition', then enter your product key into that app.

Please provide a screenshot of that app window and please hide your product key in the screenshot.

It is a retail copy and I still have the product key.

The Show Key App appears to incorrectly claim it is an 8.1 key, however I have the original WIndows 10 Pro packaging.

Thank you for the screenshot, there is no problem indicated with your licence, it seems to be just a problem with your system accessing the activation servers, how long have you been seeing the activation error?

What is the last 5 characters of your product key?

The errors began yesterday, shortly before a reboot to install a new update. The last 5 digits are 7T8KB.

Thank you for the extra information, your licence is a full retail licence, but it is a Windows 8.1 licence, if you purchased the Windows 10 licence from a 3rd party retailer many years ago, it was very common for them to sell Windows 8.1 product keys, because at that time that key would work to activate Windows 10.

Open Command Prompt by right clicking its icon and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Run this command and replace the X's with your product key, then press Enter.

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

When that command completes, close Command Prompt and restart your PC and check if Windows is activated, if not, you will need to contact Microsoft Support directly, they may be able to find the retail licence linked to your account and re-activate Windows for you.

Command prompt provides this error. Do you have a way I can contact Microsoft Support? Their Contact link leads me to a 404.

Their support is very hard to contact, try to find a local support number, if not, open the Get Help app in Windows, then repeatedly ask the bot in that app to 'speak to a person', you may eventually get a link to speak to their support by live chat support.

After 3+ hours with Microsoft support the answer they provided was because the Product Key was from a free program meant for students. It worked for 6 years, and then failed with their new update. Lesson learned, do not buy product keys or physical installation media online.
