Dear @Amy D,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand that you're having an unexpected issue printing Excel gridline. From my research, the issue is that if you have applied any type of border (even a white border or a very thin line) to any part of your sheet, Excel assumes you are manually controlling the visual appearance and will not print the default gridlines for the area covered by the custom border.
Here are the most likely causes and the steps to resolve them:
1.Check for Conflicts with Borders
Even if you only applied borders to the outside of your data, they might interfere.
- Select the entire range you intend to print.
- Go to the Home tab > Font group.
- Click the Borders dropdown menu and select No Border. This removes all custom borders, allowing the default gridlines setting to take over.
- Try printing again.
2.Verify Print Settings (Two Locations)
You must ensure that the "Print Gridlines" option is selected in the proper place, as there are two related settings:
Page Setup Dialogue (The Primary Setting):
- Go to the Page Layout tab.
- In the Sheet Options group, look at the Gridlines section.
- Make sure the Print checkbox is selected.
Page Setup Dialogue Box (The Advanced Setting):
- Go to the Page Layout tab and click the small diagonal arrow (the dialogue box launcher) in the bottom-right corner of the Page Setup group.
- Go to the Sheet tab.
- Under Print, ensure the Gridlines checkbox is selected.
3.Ensure Gridlines are Black
If your default print settings are set to monochrome or if you are using a faint theme, the gridlines might be too light to register on the printer.
If the problem persists after removing borders, you may need to apply explicit borders (using a thin, solid, black line) to guarantee visibility, as this is more reliable than relying on the default gridlines.
I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
