How do I re- activate employer provided Office 365 on my computer after a new motherboard installed?

I have Office 365 on my home computer that my school lets us download (I'm an educator). I just had to replace the motherboard on my computer and now Office doesn't work. I tried re-downloading it from work, but it won't activate. Any suggestions?

    Dear Brad Greenwood,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

Thank you for sharing the details. When you replace a major hardware component like the motherboard, Office may see your computer as a new device, which can break the activation link. Since your Office 365 license is provided by your school, activation depends on signing in with your school account, not a product key.

Here are some steps you can try:

Step 1: Sign in with your school account

Open any Office app (Word, Excel).

    • Go to File > Account > Sign in.
    • Use your school-provided email and password.

    Step 2: Check your license

Visit https://portal.office.com and sign in with your school account.

    • Confirm that your subscription is active under My Account > Subscriptions.

Step 3: Repair or reinstall Office

    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft Office > Change > Online Repair.

Or download Office again from Microsoft 365 portal.

Step 4: If activation still fails

    • Contact your school’s IT department. They may need to:

    Reset your license.

Remove old device entries and allow activation on the new hardware.

I hope this information helps point you in the right direction. If you run into any issues while trying the steps, or if something still doesn’t feel quite right, please don’t hesitate to reach out again. I’ll do my best to support you however I can.

Looking forward to hearing back from you with any updates or additional details.

    Warm regards,
