How do I save a document in Word when I keep getting a dialog box that states, A File Error has occurred

I was working on a rough draft of my research paper when I noticed that the autosave clicked off automatically. It will not allow me to save the work through 'Save As', 'Save', or autosave. It also will not allow me to save it to a thumb drive. I need to get this sent to my instructor tonight by midnight. Is there anyone who can help me.

Thank you,

Lena

If you are encountering a file error when trying to save your document in Word, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check for Disk Space: Ensure that your device has enough disk space to save the document. If your disk is full, you may need to free up some space using the Disk Cleanup tool.
    2. Rename the Document: Sometimes, simply renaming the document can help. You can try saving it with a different name or in a different format (like .rtf).
    3. Use the Save As Option: If you haven't already, try using the "Save As" option to save the document under a new name. You can do this by selecting File > Save As and choosing a different location or file type.
    4. Check for File Corruption: If the document is corrupted, you might need to recover it. You can try opening the document in a different version of Word or using the recovery options available in Word.
    5. Create a New Document: If all else fails, you can copy the content from the problematic document and paste it into a new Word document. This can sometimes bypass the issues with the original file.
    6. Update Office: Ensure that your Office applications are up to date, as updates can fix bugs and improve functionality.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to consult Microsoft support for further assistance.

AutoSave only works with files saved on OneDrive/SharePoint. If you're saving to your hard disk, the AutoSave feature does nothing.

I don't recommend saving directly to a thumb drive, that's a frequent source of document corruption. Your hard disk is safer.
