Hello everyone,

i have recently updated my computer, including the motherboard. Now i wanted to set up an entirely new computer with a fresh start. Bought a license key for Win11Pro and downloaded the Windows Media Creation Tool to boot from a USB.

However, i am now in the unfortunate situation that my microsoft account which i have used before, is now apparently not able to take on my new device. What can i do to fix this?

Best regards

    1

Open the Settings app, then go to the activation settings section.

Click the Troubleshoot button, then select 'I changed my hardware' and in the resulting list, select the previously activated device, that is the process to move your licence to the new hardware/PC.

    If that process is failing.

Where did you get your Windows Pro licence did you purchase a full retail Windows licence direct from Microsoft or from a 3rd party retailer, and if so, do you have the product key?

When you change significant hardware components like the motherboard, Windows may require reactivation. Here are steps you can take to resolve the activation issue after setting up your new computer:

    1. Ensure Internet Connection: Make sure your new device is connected to the internet. Windows needs to connect to Microsoft servers to activate.
    2. Use the Activation Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and look for the Troubleshoot option. This can help you reactivate Windows if it detects that you've made hardware changes.
    3. Sign in with the Correct Microsoft Account: Ensure that you are signing in with the Microsoft account that was previously associated with your Windows license. This account should have the license linked to it.
    4. Re-enter Product Key: If the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, you can try re-entering your product key. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and select Change product key to enter your new license key.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: If you still cannot activate Windows, you may need to contact Microsoft support for assistance. They can help you verify your license and resolve any issues related to hardware changes.

By following these steps, you should be able to activate Windows on your new device successfully.
