I have had may laptop updated to Windows11 and completely lost its keyboard and mouse functionality. I have read about a recent Windows 11 update, specifically KB5066835, that has a known bug that prevents USB keyboards and mice from working in the WinRE.

The computer tech guy who did the update for me tried all the recommended advice he has found on the Microsoft website and other forums,  but couldn’t solve the problem.

I was wondering if  you could give any advice on this matter.

It appears that you are experiencing issues with USB keyboard and mouse functionality in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) after installing the Windows security update KB5066835. This is a known issue that has been documented, and it affects USB devices specifically within WinRE, while they continue to work normally within the Windows operating system.

To resolve this issue, Microsoft released an out-of-band update (KB5070773) on October 20, 2025, which addresses this problem. It is recommended that you install the latest update for your device, as it includes important improvements and resolutions for this issue.

If you are unable to boot into Windows to install the update, here are some workarounds you can try:

    1. If your laptop has a touchscreen, you can use the touchscreen's touch keyboard to navigate within WinRE.
    2. If your laptop has a PS/2 port, you can connect a PS/2 keyboard or mouse to navigate within WinRE.
    3. If you previously created a USB recovery drive, you can boot from that recovery drive, which should restore USB functionality in WinRE.
    4. If applicable, OEMs and enterprises can use the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) in Configuration Manager or deploy push-button reset features to recover affected devices.

Make sure to check for and install the latest updates to resolve the issue completely.
