Will the online Word 365 ever have the Developer tab added for increased functionality?

Are there any plans to make the online Word 365 have similar functionality with the desktop version by including the Developer tab?

I'm sure other professionals would have a myriad of uses for it, while I'd appreciate leaving my Word docs in One Drive versus having them all stored locally. Personally, I use the Developer tab to insert Drop-down Lists into Word rubrics used in the university courses I teach.

Currently, Word for the web does not support the Developer tab, and there are no indications in the provided context about plans to add this functionality in the future. The Developer tab is primarily available in the desktop version of Word, which allows users to access advanced features such as inserting content controls, including drop-down lists.

For users who rely on these features, using the desktop version of Word may be necessary. However, Word for the web does allow for collaboration and document editing in a cloud environment, which might be beneficial for storing documents in OneDrive.

    Dear @Beaver, Adam Scott,
Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you’d like to use the Developer tab in Word Online for tasks like adding drop-down lists to rubrics, and you’re asking if this feature will be added in the future.

At this time, Word for the web (Word Online) does not include the Developer tab or support advanced features such as content controls, macros, or VBA scripting. These capabilities are available only in the Word desktop application for Windows and Mac.

Word Online is designed for lightweight editing and collaboration in the browser. Advanced developer tools require functionality that is currently only supported in the desktop environment.

    Alternatives you can use now

    • Create and edit documents with the Developer tab in the Word desktop app, then save them to OneDrive or SharePoint for easy access and sharing online.
    • Use form fields or tables in Word Online as a basic workaround for structured input.

However, you can rest assured that you are not alone, I’ll continue to monitor this case and will reach out to you with any new updates as soon as possible. If any updates or announcements are made regarding this feature, I will make sure to share them with you as soon as possible.

I understand this may not be the outcome you were hoping for. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
