Windows 11 will not reactivate after hardware change

First, let me say I more than likely created this problem. It started with a motherboard failure in my HP desktop. I bought a new one and put the hard drive from the failed machine into it. I reactivated Windows 11 Pro through my account and all was fine. Well, mostly. I had some minor issues with trying to remove a bluetooth device and some other odd issues.

Ultimately, I decided to try and find a replacement motherboard for my original machine. I purchased a used one on eBay and installed it into my original machine, transferred all the components including the original SSD drive that had just been reactivated in the temporary machine. I boot the original machine up, it installs a new BIOS and, once Windows starts, Update loads all the new device drivers. Everything looks great EXCEPT I cannot now reactivate Windows 11 Pro anymore. I am guessing that MS thinks this is just too many changes.

Like I said I probably created this mess but I now have a machine that is inactivated. Since this Win 11 Pro was an upgrade I purchased and is assigned to my account I don't know why I can't reactivate it again. Is there an easy fix other than buying yet another license?

Thanks.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with Windows 11 activation after significant hardware changes, which can happen due to the way Windows ties its activation to the hardware configuration of the device. Here are some steps you can take to try to reactivate Windows 11 Pro:

    1. Check Activation Status: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation to see the current status. If it indicates that Windows is not activated, you may see an error code.
    2. Use the Activation Troubleshooter: If you see an option for "Troubleshoot" under the Activation settings, click on it. This can sometimes resolve activation issues by allowing Windows to detect the changes and revalidate your license.
    3. Re-enter the Product Key: If you have the original product key for your Windows 11 Pro, you can try re-entering it. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and select "Change product key."
    4. Sign in with the Correct Microsoft Account: Ensure that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that was used to purchase or activate Windows 11 originally. This account should have the license associated with it.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to contact Microsoft Support for assistance. They can help you with reactivation, especially if they can verify that the license is still valid and associated with your account.
    6. Consider Hardware Changes: If the hardware changes are extensive, Windows may require a new activation. If you continue to have issues, you might need to consider purchasing a new license, but this should be a last resort after exhausting other options.

It's important to note that Windows requires a firmware-embedded activation key for automatic activation after hardware changes, and if that key is not present or the device configuration is significantly altered, reactivation can fail.

Did you originally purchase the half price Windows Home to pro upgrade licence by clicking 'Go to the Store' on the Windows activation settings window, or did you purchase a full Windows Pro licence from Microsoft?

The half price Home to Pro upgrade licence required a Windows Home version to be activated before the upgrade licence can be used.

Download the free ShowKeyPlus app from the Microsoft Store.

Please provide a screenshot of that app window and please hide your product key in the screenshot.

Here's a look at my product keys. There are two and they are different.

I believe I purchased the Win11 Pro Upgrade from the store.

    Thanks.
