Received an email stating "Notice Of Termination Of Mail Services." from "<Mod remove PII> ".

Hi <Mod remove PII> , Your Mail version is outdated. Failure to Upgrade to the newest Outlook.com Version now will result to a permanent account closure. According to provision 17.9 of Terms and Conditions, Hotmail may at anytime terminate its services for accounts.

Is this legitimate?

The email you received appears to be a phishing scam. Legitimate emails from Microsoft support will come from specific domains such as microsoft.com, microsoftsupport.com, or mail.support.microsoft.com. The domain "customermail.microsoft.com" is not one of the recognized domains used by Microsoft for support communications. Additionally, the content of the email, which threatens account closure unless you upgrade, is a common tactic used in phishing attempts to create urgency and trick users into providing personal information or clicking on malicious links.

It is advisable not to respond to the email, click on any links, or provide any personal information. You can report the email as a phishing attempt to Microsoft for further investigation.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Could you please send a screenshot showing the full sender email address? That way we can check carefully and see if it’s really coming from Microsoft or if it might be a spoofed phishing email.

The official Microsoft address for account security notices is:

    1000008401

The one you shared doesn’t quite match for account related warning, which makes me think it may not be legitimate. But the @customermail.microsoft.com looks like a legitimate address use by Microsoft Rewards, not for account closure related support.

Reference: "Can I trust email from the Microsoft account team?" https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/can-i-trust-email-from-the-microsoft-account-team-685fd302-f52f-1a9f-cc13-065dec46fe25

    To be safe, I recommend:

    • Don’t click on any links or download anything from that email.
    • Go directly to the Microsoft Account Security page https://account.microsoft.com/security and check your recent sign-in activity. If there’s nothing unusual there, then the message most likely isn’t from Microsoft.
    • If you didn’t request any changes, it’s a good idea to ignore or report the email as phishing.

I really hope this information is helpful.
