I had a newly installed Windows 11 Pro that was activated and found out that my motherboard didn't support AVX2 for Adobe Premiere Pro so I thought that I would replace the motherboard that would support AVX2 but didn't change my hard drive which is now not being recognized as activated. The problem I have with personal owner and administrator I am both in one set so even though I have an admin password I don't have and icon with that title. So how do I get my windows activate without formatting the drive and starting all over, I had a project that I was working on!

    Hi Angel,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how frustrating this situation can be, especially when you’ve got an important project in progress and don’t want to start from scratch. Hardware changes like replacing a motherboard often trigger Windows activation issues because the digital license is tied to your device’s hardware profile.

The best approach is to ensure your Microsoft account is linked to your Windows license. Go to Settings → System → Activation, sign in with the same Microsoft account you used before, and then run the Activation Troubleshooter. Choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”, select your current device, and click Activate. This usually works if your license was linked beforehand.

Next, check your license type by running slmgr /dli in Command Prompt. If it’s a Retail license, it can transfer easily. If it’s OEM, it’s tied to the original motherboard, and you may need to reinstall Windows Home, activate it, and then upgrade to Pro again.

Last, if the troubleshooter doesn’t resolve it, you can manually enter your product key under Activation → Change product key, or contact Microsoft Support directly from the Activation settings. They can often help reactivate after a hardware change without requiring a full reinstall.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions If the answer is helpful, please click "Accept Answer".

    Carlo
