I accidentally removed a task from Microsoft To-Do app, and it is not present in Deleted Items. How can I recover it?

I have a To Do app to track subtasks of words I need to import after reading foreign literature. And so happened I probably missclicked and my task with a whole bunch of subtasks (words, probably up to 60) is completely gone. I looked up the problem and went to the Outlook's folder "Deleted Items", yet it is not present here, although some junk from a month ago+ is. I never used Outlook itself, so created the mail to reach the folder only after that accidental deletion. Is it a bug? For the list was on my phone, and after syncing it disappeared as well there and definitely not in other folders/done tasks, checked them twice. I had the task "done" with the same name, so could it be the reason it didn't appear in Deleted Items? Is there anything I or support can do?

Unfortunately, the Microsoft To-Do app does not have a built-in feature to recover deleted tasks if they are not found in the Deleted Items folder. When you delete a task in Microsoft To-Do, it typically moves to the Deleted Items folder in Outlook if you are using the same account. However, if the task is not appearing there, it may be permanently deleted.

Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Check Other Devices: If you have the To-Do app installed on multiple devices, check those to see if the task is still visible.
    2. Sync Issues: Ensure that your app is fully synced. Sometimes, tasks may not appear immediately due to sync delays.
    3. Contact Support: If the task is crucial and you cannot find it, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance. They may have additional tools or methods to help recover lost tasks.

It's also worth noting that if you had a task with the same name marked as done, it should not affect the visibility of the deleted task in the Deleted Items folder.

Unfortunately, if the task is not recoverable from the Deleted Items folder and you cannot find it on any device, it may be lost permanently.

Hello Arex Severs, thanks for posting this in our community.

Microsoft To Do does not maintain a “Deleted Items” folder like Outlook does. When you delete a task in To Do, it is permanently removed from the list and from the cloud sync, and there is no built-in recovery option for deleted tasks unlike Outlook emails. The reason you saw nothing in Outlook’s Deleted Items is because To Do tasks are stored in a different service layer (Microsoft To Do backend, which syncs via Exchange Online), and deletion is final unless you have a backup or version history.

If your To Do was linked to Outlook Tasks, you can check the Recover Deleted Items option in Outlook Web. Go to Outlook Web, open Deleted Items, and then select Recover Deleted Items from the server. If the task was synced as an Outlook Task, it might appear there.

If the task was deleted in To Do and not synced to Outlook Tasks, it’s likely unrecoverable unless you have a device backup. For future protection, consider setting up regular exports or syncing with Outlook Tasks to have recovery options.

    Kind regards,

    John Oli
