Hello Martyn Harris,
Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand you’re confused about why you're being charged for extra storage.
There are a few common reasons this can happen:
- You might have an additional OneDrive storage plan
- Sometimes users accidentally subscribe to a separate OneDrive storage add‑on (like 100GB), which is billed independently from Microsoft 365.
- You can check your active subscriptions here: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders. Look for anything labeled OneDrive Standalone or Additional storage.
- If OneDrive on your device is using a different email than the one you think you're paying with, it may show charges or storage prompts. To verify:
- Open OneDrive → Settings
- Go to Account
- Check the email address shown
- If you’re sharing storage (e.g., in a family group), another member may have filled up the limit, causing OneDrive to recommend upgrading. You can see the storage breakdown here: https://onedrive.live.com/?id=Account&qt=Storage
- Even without a subscription, free OneDrive accounts are limited to 5GB. If you turn on:
- Desktop/Documents/Pictures backup
- Camera uploads
- PC folder sync
…it can fill up quickly, and OneDrive may charge if you purchased extra space earlier.
Let me know how it goes.
