How do I correct an incorrect path to my new Outlook data files using Windows 11?

After migrating all of my information from my old laptop with Windows 10 to my new laptop with Windows 11, I cannot open Outlook classic on my new laptop. When I try to open it, I get the message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\pknee\OneDrive\Documents******@comporium.net - OutlookPOP.pst cannot be accessed."

On my old laptop, the path to my Outlook data files was C:\Users\pknee\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook******@comporium.net.ost. I copied the data file on my old laptop, *@comporium.net.ost, to a flash drive and transferred it to my new laptop at C:\Users\pknee\OneDrive\Documents*@comporium.net.ost. When I clicked on the file, I received the message to select the program to open the .ost file. I chose Outlook.exe but received the message:

"The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another program."

I do not know another program to try. So, I tried the path on my new laptop of C:\Users\pknee\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook******@comporium.net.ost. Again when I clicked on the file, I got the same message to select the program to open the .ost file. I chose Outlook.exe again and got the same message as before:

"The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another program."

I prefer Outlook classic. That is what I have used in the past and I should have that option but I cannot get it to work. Any suggestions on what I might try next? Thanks, Phil

To correct the incorrect path to your Outlook data files on your new laptop with Windows 11, you can follow these steps:

    1. Verify the File Type: Ensure that you are using the correct file type. The .ost file is an offline Outlook Data File that is typically tied to an Exchange account. If you are trying to open a .ost file directly, it won't work as .ost files are not meant to be opened directly. Instead, they are used by Outlook to store a local copy of your mailbox.
    2. Create a New Outlook Profile: Since you are experiencing issues with the current setup, creating a new Outlook profile may help. Here’s how to do it:
      • Open Control Panel and search for Mail.
      • Click on Show Profiles and then select Add to create a new profile.
      • Follow the prompts to set up your email account again.
      • After setting up, you can specify the location of your .ost file during the setup process.
    3. Use the Correct Path: If you want to specify a new location for your .ost file, you can do so by modifying the registry settings. However, this method is more advanced:
      • Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run dialog (Windows Key + R).
      • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\xx.0\Outlook, where xx is your Office version (e.g., 16 for Office 2016).
      • Right-click on Outlook, select New, then Expandable String Value, and name it ForceOSTPath.
      • Set the value to the path where you want the .ost file to be stored.
    4. Repair Outlook: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you might want to repair your Outlook installation. You can do this through the Control Panel by selecting Programs and Features, finding Microsoft Office, and choosing the repair option.
    5. Check OneDrive Settings: Since you are using OneDrive, ensure that the folder where you are trying to access the .ost file is properly synced and accessible. Sometimes, files may not sync correctly, leading to access issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to correct the path and access your Outlook data files successfully.
